The MoonRunners

Updated: Apr 27, 2020

Similar to the likes of Slaves and Milk Teeth, MoonRunners add their own twist to the traditional Garage Rock sound prevalent in Central Scotland’s indie scene. Gathering inspiration from 60’s rock and roll to modern indie and hailing from Edinburgh, MoonRunners are a two-piece band who describe their sound as ‘Garage Moosic’. Only coming into the scene as recently as 2018 (please take me back, this is a living hell), the MoonRunners are quite a fresh band though they run on a life-long friendship.

Their music is very unique- I could only describe them as the gritty Beach Boys, and I love it. Their most recent track, ‘Dano’ clearly puts this sound on display. With the classic surf and turf guitar riff to begin leading into the slightly distorted vocals to give it that spunky indie vibe. With the added catchy lyrics and beat, their distinct sound is a fresh take on the traditional modern indie construct and is quickly making ‘Dano’ one of my top tracks.

According to a previous interview, they say: “‘Dano’ was written as a laugh because Cal had been suffering from writer's block. We thought why not write a song about being unable to write songs so the lyrics directly reference that from not being able to get words onto paper to begging your mates to continue coming to shows even though they’ve seen you play a million and one times.”

Though they’re small in numbers the band is massive in personality, keeping the audience's attention during and in between their performance. I only just heard their music recently but I’m sad I never heard them sooner. I've been listening to ‘OCD’ on repeat for most of quarantine (please wash your hands).

In short, the band's unique sound and amazing live performances are quickly pushing the band up in my top ten list and I can only hope (for my sanity) they release more tracks soon.

Catch them on Spotify as, "MoonRunners", and Instagram @moonrunners.
