Goth GF- Spooky Bitch

Grab your Doc Martens and palest foundation because from one recovering goth to another, this bands gonna send you straight back to the simpler days of Myspace and self cut bangs.

If you’re into eyeliner, mosh pits and monster energy drinks, GOTH GF is definitely a band to add to your playlist. With their first and newest release only coming out in April of this year, their EP- Spooky Bitch, is filled to the brim with energy and edge. Hailing from the underpasses of Glasgow the three-piece is made up of Hannah, Nicky and Jonny, who all add their own bit of spice to the explosive group.

A mix of garage-rock, punk and… country? Spooky Bitch embodies all of the edge of a teenager high on a lack of dopamine and too much redbull. With the first song on the EP- aptly named ‘Intro’, putting this on full display. The manic mix of thrilling riffs, heavy bass and punchy drums makes this track one to mosh to. The lack of vocals puts all your attention onto the sheer chaos of the track, giving you the chance to just lose yourself in the madness, and headbang until you sprain your neck.

Next up is, ‘What Do You Want From Me?’ This high energy track is quite self explanatory. The gritty vocals display the frustration behind the lyrics, but are mainly showing that Hannah won’t change for anyone, and is going to continue to be unapologetically herself, because she just doesn’t care- and you can't really get anymore goth than that. The vocals are only enhanced by the solid riffs and packed bass and drums, provided by Nicky and Jonny making for a track that just feels complete, putting this song at the top of my playlist.

Now we’re going to talk about the epitome of the EP that is Horse Girl. Proof that even the most absurd lyrics can make for a track that you can’t help but love. It’s a complete mash up of genres, mixing country with garage; which is something I didn’t know I needed to hear. With such insightful lyrics as 'And when I die just turn me into fucking glue', it manages to seamlessly mix the garage rock sound to country half way through. It’s had me screaming ‘i’m a horse girl’ more than once, which has only landed me a couple of confused stares and bruises from spice boys- I think it was the neighs that did it for me, I rate 12/10.

‘Goth GF’ is just a good summary of the band and the EP as a whole. The almost ghost-like vocals and electrifying riffs intensified by the warmth of the drums and fullness of the bass allows for a track that puts the bands complete talent, chemistry and potential on display and is the reason the EP one of my current favourites of 2020.

All in all they are everything you could want from a garage rock band, they're filled with energy, personality and edge, and if this is only their first EP I can hardly imagine the potential the band has and what’s in store for them in the future. Either way I suddenly feel the urge to down a can of monster and mosh to Thomas the Tank Engine under a Freeway.
