Cheap Teeth- It costs a lot of money to look this cheap

Scotland- considered one of the most beautiful countries in the world; with rolling hills, fantastic lochs and enough bookies to get the devil himself into enough debt to sell his soul. Without the more, how would you say... grim aspects of life, it would be plain boring. Cheap Teeth are a band that see these darker features and say, “Sounds like a banger to me”.

This new wave punk group are dripping in the nostalgia that the Tenants soaked and sleep deprived punk rockers of the modern era are fixing for. The four piece hail from the dark closes of Edinburgh holding their hearts on their sleeves with every new track they produce. Every song is drenched with a mix of passion, personality and energy that so many artists these days seem to lack.

Their first release, “Fly on the Wall/The Vicar's Fingers” put the band's persona on complete display. From the first second, the exact nature of “Fly on the Wall” is set out. It’s the Monster Mash for people with sleeve tattoos and leather jackets; if you listen, you’ll understand exactly what I mean. The distorted guitar gives the entire track an eerie backbone throughout, alongside cold sounding drums and vocals that almost linger making this track haunting- in the best way possible. The vocals and chemistry behind this song are immense, it’s like going back to the past and listening to the likes of ‘Television’ for the first time all over again.

“The Vicar's Fingers” gives me chills every time I listen to it. The vocals almost sound like desperate pleas, and the raw emotion from the track has me in awe, even the instruments sound like they're in pain. The vocals are very reminiscent of Tom Waits, with the expert use of twangy guitars and synths throughout the track giving it the classic vibes of The Doors, and even with all of this it still manages to be one of the most original songs I’ve listened to all year. The end of the song is a complete contrast to the beginning with the almost whispered lyrics and instruments all coming to life at the end in one last display of it’s raw emotion and passion, it’s pretty frickin immense.

All in all, their newest release, “Belly of the Beast” is punk rock at its peak. The gritty vocals and guitar, mixed with the warm drums and dirty bass all come together to create a song that just encompasses everything I love about the band. All I can ask is for you to take five minutes and have a listen for yourself into what four guys with spare time, passion, talent and a garage can produce.

Go and show some love to the small creators in this really weird time.
